About David

Born and raised in the US, David went to China to teach in schools and training centers for many years and grew frustrated with systems at home and abroad that train kids to learn passively. So he developed Redígo Studio to help kids become the drivers of their own learning. He has a Masters of Teaching from the University of Southern California and another Masters in Graphic Design from Nanjing University of the Arts. He loves art, storytelling, deep conversations, and good tea. He currently teaches and homeschools together with his wife and two sons in Goa, India.

How We Learn: Academics

Students are used to being led along paths of learning passively, with the important decisions already made for them by adults. But if all their classes are like this, how can they learn to make good choices and take responsibility for their own thinking and expression? In Redígo classes, students take responsibility for their own learning and work with the teacher to determine which resources are most useful for them.In the first class session, students set goals for themselves, choosing which resources they want to use.For the academic portion, they choose a book like Write Source, for beginner to intermediate levels, or full novels like Harry Potter for more advanced levels, sometimes both, or neither, depending on the students’ goals! Because the students have choice in which sources they'll be learning from, they become much more invested in their learning.

How We Learn: Roleplay

For the roleplay portion, they choose a setting and create characters for their shared story. In between classes, they do age-appropriate creative activities of their own choice, such as writing and illustration, which they can share together in the next class. The teacher gives them feedback about what they did well as well as how they could do better, with a focus on encouragement and key concepts so they don't get overwhelmed.

In the second part of the class, the students participate in roleplaying their story. This is the "fun" part. The students have to think creatively and logically about how the characters in their story setting will try to solve their problems. It's a very different sort of thinking than you get in most classes -- very open to lots of possibilities, not like many classes where the teacher always knows the "correct" answer. This roleplay gives the students two things: first, the motivation to continue; they are always excited to see what happens next. Second, it gives them something to write about: their character's background, some new supporting character, some descriptive details of the setting, perhaps even a poem or opinion about the story too! The key is that students themselves choose what to write, and they take up this learning process as their own. Finally, in the next class, the cycle will begin again when the students share what they wrote.

Parents Testimonials for David's Redígo Stories Classes

“My daughter has loved working with David. His classes are so unique - so much imagination, fun and collaboration involved. He’s really taken writing from being a solo craft, to something you can dissect, learn together and improve collaboratively.“My daughter’s looked forward to these classes like no other, and it’s shown in her writing. She’s more thoughtful about her characters and her plots have become more sophisticated.“I’ve also had a few conversations with David - and I’ve been struck by the fact that his observations about patterns in my daughter’s writing reflect what is going on more broadly in her life. That’s given me a really helpful window into what support she may need as a person finding her way in the world.”

“My daughter is really enjoying David’s classes. She’s always talking about something or the other that was discussed in class, and she always seems to be learning and enjoying. She’s very engaged and enjoys writing and editing her work. Thanks for inspiring and encouraging her!”

“David’s classes have been a delight that we discovered during the lockdown. My son (who is usually very wary of new classes) is completely in love with this class and looks forward to it all week.“This is not just a creative writing class - it’s much much more. It’s immersing into a world where you are free to let your imagination run wild and have tons of fun along the way!“David is super patient and so helpful and takes out time to go out of his way and assist the kids and encourage them. His passion is rubbing off on the kids and we couldn’t be happier to have found him as a mentor.”

“My daughter loved David’s classes. I asked her why and she said, ‘I learnt to be bold in expressing my thoughts and words in my writings, without the fear of thinking my views would be deemed as right or wrong. This is because David gave me the confidence to think and express my views with my own logical explanation.’”

“David has awakened the curiosity in my daughter. He’s taught her the tools to tap into her imagination and to build on it in the form of stories.“His ability to keep the kids constantly engaged and enthused about writing to me has been the most remarkable achievement. My 11-year-old is building on the tools David has provided her with to write stories of her own, a book in the making, in telling vivid tales to her younger sister about mythical creatures and modern times, and in giving her a focus that all the online learning had failed to achieve.“Finally, David’s class has been that one bright spark in the times of the pandemic that shook their lives and forced them to live a strange reality. The kids laugh, role play, express themselves with great joy and don’t want to log off during their weekly class!”
